"Since I started out I've worked through the transition from strictly analogue to digital recording and the changes in technology have been beyond was thought possible.

One thing hasn't changed though and that's the importance of a good performance. What's always fascinated me about recording is how emotion is captured by using magnetic tape and nowadays with binary numbers. That's why the vibe of a studio is just as important as the gear.No amount of expensive gear is going to put passion and commitment into a recording.

Having said that, capturing a great performance on poor equipment doesn't work either. I set up the Offbeat studio for my own using Logic Audio on a MAC computer using the best Metric Halo convertors, a mixer, good mics, speakers and instruments and a growing sample library. I need to know when being creative that takes, performed off the top of the head, are good enough quality to make it onto the final record.

Anyone using Offbeat for their recordings has the same advantages. It's set up as a creative space and ease and speed of use is what the studio is designed for. The bass is always set up through a bass amp and linked to the mixer, ready to go whenever I want to pick it up. The whole set up is designed to do the same for the whole recording process".
